I have rarely been a fan of this genre — the self-help genre. Besides my recent read, Two Weeks Notice by Amy Porterfield, and Mark Manson’s The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck, I can count a handful of books I have read from this genre. And this is a book I read about 4 years back! 

 

However, The Mountain Is You by Brianna Wiest turned out to be a refreshingly honest and insightful guide to overcoming self-sabotage and achieving self-mastery. And I stumbled upon it at one of the most trying moments. I have had a lot of moments this year where I have engaged in self-sabotaging behaviors. Perhaps that’s why I related and liked some sections of the book more.

 

Before I go any further, I’d like to point out that I listened to the audio version on Audible. I have been having some sort of ‘reader’s block,’ so I decided to give audiobooks another go. And I enjoyed listening to this one.

The book’s premise is that the obstacles we face in life, our greatest fears, insecurities, and self-sabotaging behaviors, are not external mountains but are, in fact, a part of ourselves. 

 

Wiest’s unique perspective challenges us to confront these inner mountains head-on and transform them into opportunities for growth and self-discovery. Her writing is not about quick fixes or empty affirmations but about genuine self-awareness and creating lasting change.

 

The book is divided into several sections, each addressing the different aspects of self-sabotage and self-mastery. Wiest skillfully weaves personal anecdotes, psychological insights, and practical exercises into her narrative. Her words are relatable and enlightening, making it easy for readers/listeners to connect with the content.

 

My Thoughts About The Mountain Is You by Brianna Wiest

 

One of the most relatable and enlightening parts of the book is the way Wiest discusses self-sabotage. She doesn’t simply label it as a negative behavior to be eliminated, as some of us have to see it. 

 

Instead, she encourages us to recognize it as a natural defense mechanism that has evolved to protect us. By understanding the roots of self-sabotage, we can learn to work with it rather than against it. Wiest’s compassionate approach helps us cultivate self-compassion and self-acceptance.

 

Throughout the book, Wiest offers practical exercises and prompts that encourage self-reflection and self-improvement. These exercises provide valuable tools to identify and confront their inner mountains. Whether it’s addressing self-doubt, fear of failure, or patterns of self-sabotage. Additionally, the author’s guidance is also empathetic and actionable.

 

I also loved Wiest’s writing style, and in this regard, the narrator’s voice and tone were both eloquent and accessible. She uses clear, concise language, making complex psychological concepts understandable to many readers. 

 

“The Mountain Is You” also offers a holistic approach to self-mastery. It delves into various aspects of life, including relationships, career, and personal development. Wiest argues that true self-mastery isn’t just about individual accomplishments but also about fostering healthy relationships, finding purpose, and maintaining balance in all areas of life.

 

Wiest’s emphasis on the importance of self-awareness and emotional intelligence is a recurring theme throughout the book. She highlights the significance of understanding one’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors and how they relate to self-sabotage. By increasing self-awareness, one can break free from destructive patterns and develop healthier, more fulfilling lives.

 

Having said that, there are moments I felt like some of the chapters were on repeat. There are times I honestly thought I had played back the audiobook without realizing it. Because of this, perhaps the audio could have been shorter. I have seen similar comments on reviews where some readers feel there’s a lot of filler content. 

 

Would I recommend this book? Perhaps. I think of it as a book you’d need by your side when you need a pick-me-up. During those moments when you are feeling a little down and would like a reminder of how to turn your self-sabotaging habit into a positive thing. 

 

However, if you really need help, are struggling with your mental health, or need a deep self-help book, this is probably not for you.
