“Love’s about finding the one person who makes your heart complete. Who makes you a better person than you ever dreamed you could be. It’s about looking in the eyes of your wife and knowing all the way to your bones that she’s simply the best person you’ve ever known.”
― Julia Quinn, The Viscount Who Loved Me
I am a sucker for romance books, sometimes, and I think Book #2 of the Bridgerton series is my favorite!
I mean, just look at that excerpt up there!

The Viscount Who Loved Me is Antony Bridgerton’s love story. He is the firstborn son and the current Viscount since his father passed on.
But Antony is a renowned rake. He knows it. Everyone knows it. And Lady Whistledown says it better:
“This Author has come to the conclusion that there are rakes, and there are Rakes.
Anthony Bridgerton is a Rake.”
He knows his circle of friends. All rakes. No, wonder he wanted a duel after he caught The Duke of Hastings making out with his sister and destroying her honour!
But after keeping away from society for years and evading mamas who would want nothing but to marry off their daughters to a handsome Bridgerton, and a Viscount no less, Anthony is ready to get himself a wife and settle down.
He believes in true love; he has seen what his sister Daphne and Simon have. And remembers what his parents had before death, courtesy of a bee sting that snatched his father. But he doesn’t want a marriage where he loses his mind and heart by falling in love. He wants to be in control of his feelings, and most of all, he is scared of falling in love and dying abruptly like his father.
So, what does Antony do? He eyes the debutant of the season, Ms. Edwinah Sheffield. She is pretty enough and with a brain but not someone he sees himself falling head over heels in love with. That’s good enough for him. But to get Edwinah to say yes, he has to go through her elder sister, Kate Sheffield who is nothing but a nuisance to him.
She is controlling and definitely doesn’t approve of London’s biggest Rake marrying her sister. Which is fair enough, he is willing to do anything possible to get Kate to approve of the marriage. But their interactions scream nothing but CHEMISTRY! From the slow-burn friendship (starting with Collins’s trap into getting them talking) to the banter and a friendship they both never thought would happen.
And just like that, they are both caught in a compromising situation when Kate is stung by a bee (a pretty anxious scenario for Antony), leading to a fast marriage. It is like none of the Bridgerton siblings wants to follow society’s rules on courting. Aaahhh!

My Take
Of course, I do have concerns about how Anthony treats Kate and his view on marriage. Even after the wedding, it took time for Antony to give in to his mortality fears and shower Kate with the love that she deserves.
But the real star of The Viscount Who Loved Me is Kate. I fell in love with her hardheaded and protective character! Julia Quinn did her character a lot of justice.
I can’t wait to see her character in the adaptation!
I believe, of all the Bridgerton books so far, The Viscount Who Loved Me is worth adding to your collection.
Book 1: The Duke & I
Book 3: An Offer From a Gentleman
Book 4: Romancing Mr Bridgerton
Book 5: To Sir Phillip, With Love
